Nellie Ann is a grade 11 student at Netsilik School in Taloyoak. Though there had been some archaeology and oral history
work in her community the year before, she wanted to experience it for herself in a different community. Nellie Ann wanted
to apply because she has interest in science.
Nellie Ann was a patient and fun person to be around who was a good listener. She enjoyed developing an eye for the tiny
Dorset and Pre-Dorset artifacts that the group was excavating. She learnt to be able to identify 'qammaqs' (sod houses) which
she had seen before but never knew what they were. Nellie Ann also had another first when she was interviewed for CBC radio
about the field school. She accepted this opportunity right away even though she had never done it before and was nervous.
AWESOME JOB NELLIE ANN!!!
Nellie Ann will never forget making new friends both with the participants on the field school and with others in the
community. One of her most memorable days was climbing up Igarjuaq, 'It was absolutely amazing, like I can't find the perfect
word to describe looking at the beautiful land, and the deadly mountains'.
She thinks that travelling and meeting new people will help other young Inuit to become more confident and happy with
the opportunities they have in the future.
